Best Practices x2: Ketamine and GLP-1 Compounding | July 15, 2024

July 15, 2024

Overview

This CE activity focuses on equipping pharmacists with essential knowledge and skills in the dispensing of compounded ketamine and GLP-1 medications, preparations used for a variety of indications. The activity delves into the legal obligations, diversion concerns, dosing limits, dosage forms, documentation requirements, patient education, and constructive transfer protocols. Participants will also explore the basics of compounding a drug that is essentially a copy of a commercially available medication when that drug is in shortage.

Intended audience

    • Pharmacists & Pharmacy Technicians

    Learning Objectives

    Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians

    1. Examine the documentation requirements for the compounding and dispensing process of ketamine, in accordance with regulatory standards and best practices, to foster comprehension of accountability and traceability principles.
    2. Review the legal obligations of pharmacists regarding controlled substances, including DEA and state regulations, and their implications for dispensing practices.
    3. Recognize the importance of implementing effective strategies for identifying signs of misuse or diversion through the utilization of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) and thorough patient and prescriber verification processes.
    4. Recall FDA guidance on when a pharmacy can compound a drug that is "essentially a copy" of a FDA approved drug product, focusing on its implications for compounding of GLP-1 drugs listed on the FDA drug shortage list.
    5. Assess the considerations and challenges associated with compounding GLP-1 drugs listed on the FDA drug shortage list, including formulation adjustments, sourcing of ingredients, and maintaining quality assurance measures.
