Excipients, sometimes referred to as inactive or inert ingredients, are materials used every day in compounding and play a crucial role in the functionality and efficacy of many preparations. It is therefore important that compounding professionals understand the basics of these materials when preparing extemporaneous dosage forms. This webinar will provide an opportunity for attendees to gain a better understanding of commonly used excipients and their various functions in compounded preparations. Focus will be placed on providing sufficient background information and critical factors related to excipient properties. The information learned should provide insight to help understand the careful selection of specific excipients and address formulation challenges and opportunities.

FOR PHARMACISTS:
  1. Define excipients.
  2. Describe excipient grades, types, and sources.
  3. Recognize the role of excipients in stability, efficacy, and delivery of drugs.
  4. Identify fundamental excipients in compounded preparations.
  5. Select excipients based on functional role in a dosage form; powder blends, solutions, and dispersions.
  6. Recognize the potential for excipient interactions with active drug(s) and other ingredients.
  7. Select excipients for patients with special considerations including allergies, hypersensitivities, and restrictive diets.
FOR TECHNICIANS:
  1. Define excipients.
  2. Describe excipient grades, types, and sources.
  3. Relate the role of excipients in stability, efficacy, and delivery of drugs in support of formula requirements.
  4. Classify excipients into functional groups related to compounded preparations.
  5. Relate excipients based on their functional role to a specific dosage form; powder blends, solutions, and dispersions.
  6. Recognize the relationship between excipients, active drug(s) and other ingredients.
  7. Recognize special considerations related to excipients; includes allergies, hypersensitivities, and restrictive diets.

Dr. Mastropietro is an assistant professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Nova Southeastern University, as well as a pharmacist with over 15 years of experience practicing in a number of diverse settings. His academic role involves teaching the art of pharmacy compounding and the science of formulation development using classroom and laboratory instructional methodologies that enhance the learning environment. In addition to teaching, his collaborative research activities in pharmaceutics have so far led to 6 patent applications, 5 invention disclosures, 19 publications, 51 presentations, and 2 book chapters.
