Keeping it Legit: Best Authentication Practices for Compounders – Wholesale Distributors

October 13, 2022

Overview

Today’s pharmaceutical supply chain is a series of complexities—from ingredient sourcing to exportation, packaging, repackaging, and sales, all from different countries, and finally making its way to the patient. Consequently, as this intricate web raises the potential for falsified or substandard products to permeate the market, pharmacists are required to ask themselves “Is this wholesale distributor ‘legitimate’?”

This activity aims to uncover how pharmacists can identify the potential sale of counterfeit, stolen, contaminated, or harmful drug products from wholesale distributors, and what do in these situations. The program will explore the regulations set forth by the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) that protects drug product integrity and security; risky situations; diversion of products outside the supply chain (i.e., can you sell products to a wholesaler?); counterfeits/adulteration/misbranding; maintaining product integrity; how to authenticate suppliers (initial and ongoing); red flags, and more.

Identifying and applying best authentication practices towards wholesale distributors can help reduce opportunities for the receipt and/or use of fraudulent/illegitimate products to pharmacists which, in turn, may comprise the health and safety of patients.
