The History of Desiccated Thyroid Extract and Compounding Considerations (On-demand)
AN APC WEBINAR POWERED BY LP3 NETWORK
This is the on-demand version of the webinar. The webinar was live on June 25th, 2026.
Overview
In this presentation, Dr. Zielsdorf will discuss the history of NDT (Natural Desiccated Thyroid) or DTE (Desiccated Thyroid Extract), and the development of dosing, compounding, and standardization for this critical medication.
She will present the rise and fall of use in allopathic medicine, emerging research for NDT, and the issues surrounding the lack of knowledge in prescribing NDT for the last fifty years. This includes the lack of training for clinicians including endocrinology fellows, misconceptions surrounding use, and prejudice fostered by the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, advocacy and action by compounding pharmacy professionals will be encouraged given the current landscape and threat to the compounding industry by medication classification changes to NDT.
