Pharmacy Calculations 1 – Unit Conversions, Rounding, Densities, Percentages, & Ratios

This activity largely focuses on USP General Chapter <1160> Pharmaceutical Calculations in Pharmacy Practice and provides the general information needed to perform the requisite calculations within a compounding pharmacy.

In this eLearning module, you will learn about the mathematics in compounding and calculations needed to establish formulations, modify existing formulations and verify the work before, during, and after a compounded medication is prepared. You will learn how to convert units of measure, apply accuracy guidelines, properly round calculations, calculate densities, recognize percent error, express relationships as percentages and ratios, utilize specific gravity calculations, and create stock solutions of a specific concentration.


Upon successful completion of the eLearning module you will receive an LP3 Network certificate, which can be printed and displayed in your compounding pharmacy as evidence of your training.

Learning Objectives

  • Use the metric system and convert values from one commonly used unit of measure to another
  • Apply required accuracy guidelines to the measurement of compounding ingredients
  • Apply rounding rules correctly and appropriately to measurements of weight and volume
  • Verify amounts of liquid and semi-solid ingredients in formulations by weight using their density
  • Verify accuracy and calculate percent error in the weight of dosage forms and unit doses
  • Express weight/weight (w/w), weight/volume (w/v) and volume/volume (v/v) relationships in the appropriate terms
  • Express and calculate w/w, w/v and v/v relationships as percentages and ratios
  • Calculate the amount of active pharmaceutical ingredient present in a compound based on its specific gravity
  • Calculate the amounts of solute and solvent required to create solutions of a specific concentration
