MEDISCA Australia | Veterinary Compounding Laboratory Training | 9 August 2023

Mascot, NSW AU
August 8, 2023 to August 9, 2023

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Veterinary compounding is a growing niche specialty that is high in demand and diverse in opportunity. Unlike human pharmacy, veterinary pharmacy is uniquely challenged with limited drug availability and species-specific differences; compounding opportunities are not only customized solutions, but often-required ones as well. In this laboratory course, participants will compound four different dosage forms commonly prescribed to veterinary patients, notably transdermal gels, topical shampoos, oral pastes, and chewable treats. Participants will learn important pharmaceutical techniques and protocols required for efficacious, effective, and safe compounding, including cleaning and deactivation procedures, balance calibration, standard operating procedures and their associated documentations, formulation calculations, qualitative and quantitative verifications, proper geometric addition and trituration, among more. In addition to the hands-on training, participants will review the key concepts of Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary (APF) expiry dates, United States Pharmacopeia (USP) <800>, and how to interpret a certificate of analysis (COA) and safety data sheet (SDS).

Featured Formulas*

  • Flunixin 100 mg/mL Oral Paste
  • Methimazole 25 mg/mL Transdermal PLO Gel
  • Prednisolone 5mg/mL Oral Liquid

*Formulas are subject to change. Active ingredients may be replaced with mock ingredients.
