MEDISCA Australia | Veterinary Compounding Laboratory Training | 14 Feb 2024

Sydney, NSW AU
February 13, 2024 to February 14, 2024

Veterinary compounding is a growing niche specialty that is high in demand and diverse in opportunity. Unlike human pharmacy, veterinary pharmacy is uniquely challenged with limited drug availability and species-specific differences; compounding opportunities are not only customized solutions, but often-required ones as well. In this laboratory course, participants will compound four different dosage forms commonly prescribed to veterinary patients, notably transdermal gels, topical shampoos, oral pastes, and chewable treats. Participants will learn important pharmaceutical techniques and protocols required for efficacious, effective, and safe compounding, including cleaning and deactivation procedures, balance calibration, standard operating procedures and their associated documentations, formulation calculations, qualitative and quantitative verifications, proper geometric addition and trituration, among more. In addition to the hands-on training, participants will review the key concepts of Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary (APF) expiry dates, United States Pharmacopeia (USP) <800>, and how to interpret a certificate of analysis (COA) and safety data sheet (SDS).

Featured formulas:

  • Flunixin 100 mg/mL Oral Paste
  • Methimazole 25 mg/mL Transdermal PLO Gel
  • Prednisolone 5mg/mL Oral Liquid

Intended audience

Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other compounding personnel looking for hands-on experience preparing common non-sterile dosage forms for veterinary use.

Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists (Lab)

  1. Analyse and interpret drug monographs, certificates of analysis (COA), and safety data sheets (SDS).
  2. Apply good documentation practices for common standard operating procedures (SOPs), including garbing, cleaning and deactivation, and balance calibration.

  4. Prepare commonly prescribed veterinary dosage forms, including a transdermal gel, a topical shampoo and an oral suspension.
  5. Develop or enhance non-sterile compounding skills and techniques, including geometric addition, trituration, heating, powder-to-liquid integration, powder-liquid integration into medium, high shear mixing, and mold filling, among others.
  6. Evaluate compounded dosage forms through qualitative and quantitative verification protocols.
  7. Demonstrate the importance of selecting dispensing devices that will maintain formulation integrity while facilitating proper dosing and ease of administration.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians (Lab)
