Foundational Principles of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy: The Who, What, Where, Why, and Whens
Over the past two decades, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) has been on the exponential rise. This activity aims to expel the foundational principals of BHRT, including a scientifically appraisal for its use, prescribing considerations, typical dosing, application and troubleshooting. By attending this activity, participants will leave with practical and clinically relevant material needed to enhance their BHRT compounding business.

Learning Objectives
PHARMACISTS
- Define differences between bioidentical hormones and non-bioidentical hormones
- Review steroidogenic pathway
- Compare conventional HRT with bioidentical HRT in terms of clinical efficacy, breast cancer risk, and cardiovascular risk
- Recognize the importance of diagnostic testing
- Identify principals of prescribing BHRT, dosing BHRT, applying BHRT, and troubleshooting BHRT
PHARMACY TECHNICIANS
- Define differences between bioidentical hormones and non-bioidentical hormones
- Recognize the clinical benefits and demand for personalized BHRT.

Kristy Prouse, MD, FRCSC
Dr. Kristy Prouse B.A., B.Sc., MD, FRCS(C) is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto-Faculty of Medicine and has practiced OB/GYN for the last 16 years. With a B.A. in Psychology, a B.Sc. in Genetics and Cell Biology, her conventional medical training, as well as additional training in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, Dr. Prouse’s experience and training has set the stage for her to establish the Institute for Hormonal Health in 2011. The Institute for Hormonal Health is an integrative and holistic practice with a team of multidisciplinary practitioners, specializing in hormonal therapy.
In addition to her role as medical advisor to In Common Laboratories, she sits on the editorial review board of the journal “Integrative Healthcare Practitioner”. Stemming from the success of the Institute for Hormonal Health, Dr. Prouse has since created the I-HHeLP Initiative – an online community of integrative healthcare practitioners that permits secure communication and access to online educational content and resources.
